Have You Scheduled Water Heater Maintenance This Year?

hot-steamy-water-coming-out-of-faucetWhen we’re talking about essential components to your modern home, the water heater tops the list. This system allows you and your family to comfortably shower, wash dishes, wash clothes, and more. Since it’s so important, we hope that you’re scheduling regular maintenance for it, so our professionals can thoroughly inspect it and repair it as needed.

Your water heater came with a manufacturer’s guide, which will tell you how often maintenance is needed for your specific system, but a good rule of thumb is to go no longer than a year between maintenance appointments. So if you haven’t scheduled yours for this year yet, now is the time! But why does this matter so much? What actually happens during water heater maintenance that makes it such a vital service? Read on to find out!

We Do a Sediment Flush

If you’re using a traditional storage-tank water heater, like most American homes, then a large amount of water is getting stored within your water heater for quick access. This water, especially if it’s hard water, is going to have sediment in it. Hard water, actually, is water with a high level of minerals in it–namely calcium, magnesium, and iron. These are harmless to ingest, but wreak havoc on your plumbing system. And your water heater is no exception!

What happens is that the sediment builds up in the tank of your water heater and settles to the bottom. It can cause a number of problems, such as uneven heating and it can cause your heat exchangers to work inefficiently. Part of what we do during maintenance is a flush of your system, to rid it of this sediment.

We Check the Anode Rod

This is the component of your water heater that makes it possible for this system to do its job without rusting and corroding! Your water heater has two layers of defense against water–the first is a glass layer under the metal layer of your water heater. Over time, this glass can crack and let water seep in and onto the metal lining of your water heater. The anode rod is the second line of defense. It absorbs the rust and corrosion that your water heater otherwise would.

But, the anode rod doesn’t last as long as the rest of your water heater! So, it needs to be checked and replaced on occasion, which is one of the things we do during maintenance.

The Importance of This Routine Maintenance

Water heater maintenance helps our team provide you with cleaner, healthier, and higher-quality water. It also keeps your water heater operating as efficiently as possible, for as long as possible. Professional maintenance can even increase the lifespan of your system by preventing corrosion and decay, and can prevent the drain valve of the system from getting clogged up with dirt and debris.
