Why Is Water Leaking from My AC?

Nobody wants to face a leaking air conditioner. Not only is this typically indicative of a huge problem with your cooling system, but you could experience water damage on your property. Naturally, if this occurs it’s safe to assume it’s an emergency situation and you should call a professional right away.

However, understanding why there is water leaking from your air conditioner may help you prevent it from occurring in the first place. Why does water leak from air conditioners? How can you prevent it from happening again? We’ve tackled these questions below.

How Does Water Wind Up in Your AC System?

In order to remove heat, refrigerant pumps through your air conditioning system, evaporating and condensing it. As the refrigerant condenses outside, heat is released into the air. As refrigerant evaporates inside, heat is removed from the air inside of the home.

During this evaporation process, the coil gets very cold. As a result, condensation builds up on the outside of the coil as the humid air moves over it. This condensation should ideally drip down into a tray underneath the coil and into a drainpipe.

When Water Leaks Into Your Home

When your air conditioner leaks water, it’s due to a malfunction with the drainage system that moves water out of the home. This problem could be:

  • An improperly placed condensate tray.
  • A clogged drainpipe.
  • A broken condensate pump (if your system has one).

How You Can Prevent Air Conditioning Leaks

In order to prevent air conditioner leaks from occurring in the first place, routine air conditioning maintenance is your best bet. AC maintenance visits include an inspection of the major components of your system, in addition to a tune-up and cleaning.

If your drainpipe is clogged with debris, then your HVAC technician will clean it out to prevent further problems. However, if you find that your air conditioning system has frequent issues with drainage, you may need a condensate pump to move water around with a motor and make things easier.
