The quality of the air inside your home is probably the most important health issue you can take on as a homeowner in the Salt Lake City area. There are all kinds of airborne contaminants that can find their way into your indoor air, and unless you find a way to eliminate them, they can become a real health risk for you and your family.
Of course, these types of contaminants have always been around. So why are they becoming such a big problem now? Well, the truth is that, by making our houses airtight to keep in all the heated and air conditioned air we pay for, we’ve made it much harder for proper ventilation to take place. And that means that once contaminants get into your indoor air, they stay there.
For quite a few years now, Design Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning has helped customers cut down on air contaminants and improve the overall quality of the air inside their homes. We do this by offering a range of air filtration products designed to eliminate all types of particulate contaminants, from larger pollens and dust mites to the smaller particles that make up cooking and smoke odors.
HEPA Filters
Certainly some of the most popular air cleaning products out there use high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to cut down on a large range of airborne contaminants. These filters are usually made of fiberglass fibers that create a type of mesh and can be extremely effective at catching particles that measure 0.3 microns or larger in diameter.
HEPA filters remove things like pollen, dust and pet dander with an efficiency of up to 99.97%, making it easy to see why so many people have been won over by these great products. However, HEPA filters aren’t the most effective at cutting out smoke or pet odors or at trapping smaller particles like those found in cooking fumes and other types of gases.
Charcoal Filters
To help you with cutting down on unwanted odors, charcoal filters are a great addition to your indoor air filtration system. They can be extremely effective at absorbing and filtering out the tiny particles that make up the smoke and pet odors that you’ve struggled to get out of your indoor air for so long.
Combining Different Air Filters
But charcoal filters don’t do much against larger particulate contaminants, and that’s why it’s often the combination solution that’s best. If you want to be able to thoroughly eliminate all types of airborne contaminants from your indoor environment, you’re probably going to want to install an indoor air quality system that utilizes both types of filters.
In a combination system like this, HEPA filters typically are placed in front and remove all larger particles before the air comes in contact with the charcoal filter. At that point, only the smaller particles remain, and they can easily be absorbed and eliminated.
